Common Household Chemicals Linked to Neurological Diseases
A recently published study in the journal Nature Neuroscience found that chemicals commonly found in personal-care and household products may cause damage to brain cells that are responsible for generating the myelin sheath on nerve cells in the brain. The researchers draw a link between exposure of household chemicals and certain neurological diseases such as autism, attention deficit disorders, and multiple sclerosis. Good Eggs? Study Finds That Eggs Arenāt So Bad Afterall
For centuries eggs have been a common staple in the diets of people across the world. Yet for the last few decades, largely due to changes in government guidelines based on misunderstandings of how cholesterol works in the body, eggs have largely been labeled as ābad for you.ā A new study finds that eating more than a dozen eggs each week did not negatively impact cholesterol levels compared to those on egg-free diets. This adds to the preponderance of evidence that eggs are healthy as part of a balanced diet (ABC News).
Deep Fried Trouble: Deep Fried Oils Linked to Neurodegeneration
Deep frying is a commonly used food prep method around the world- think french fries, fried chicken, spring rolls and curry puffs. Most of us know that deep fried foods arenāt the most healthy food option for us due to its metabolic impacts, including weight gain. A new animal study furthers the deep fried concerns, suggesting that long term use of recycled oils often used in deep frying may be linked to neurodegeneration and dysregulation of the communication network of the liver, gut, and brain. Future studies hope to look at the relationship between long term use of deep frying oils and specific diseases such as Alzheimerās, Parkinsonās as well as anxiety, depression and neuroinflammation. When a recent New York Times article hit my inbox last weekend, I was reminded of the āYear of the Brussel Sproutā several years back. It started with noticing friends were starting to bring brussel sprouts dishes more and more to potlucks. Then I began noticing brussel sprout dishes popping up in restaurants; with feta, with bacon, with balsamic vinaigrette. Yum. The cabbage article says the cabbage craze is really catching fire now across the country and new recipes are coming to a restaurant near you. From Our Kitchen to Yours - Recipe of the Week
Markās Powerful Detox Super Smoothie for Energy and Protein
(Serves 1, 10 minutes of prep time)
This recipe has been a favorite of mine and it makes for a tasty and fulfilling breakfast or dessert. You can make this recipe more keto friendly by substituting the banana with avocado. You will need a blender or Vitamix to blend the ingredients together. It has nearly 40 grams of protein, healthy fats if you use the avocado, energizing greens, goji, and acerola, lots of antioxidants, and zeolite powder for a powerful detox.
Ingredients:
1 Avocado OR Ā½ Banana
1 Scoop (30 Grams) of Chocolate or Vanilla Protein Powder (We use Legion Brand)
5 Grams of Zeolite Powder
2 tbsp of Greens Powder (We use 1 packet of Greens Pak by Trace Minerals)
1-2 tbsp of Berry Powder
1 Scoop of Goji Berry Powder (we use Micronutrients brand)
1 Scoop of Acerola Cherry Powder (we use Micronutrients brand)
Ā½ Cup of Fresh or Frozen Blueberries
Ā½ Cup of Fresh or Frozen Raspberries & Strawberries
1 tbsp of Almond Butter or Sunflower Butter
2 tbsp of Skyr Yogurt or other Yogurt (Greek and Skyr have high protein content)
1/2 Cup of Almond Milk, Milk, Filtered Water, OR Coconut Milk (with vanilla is our favorite!)
STEP-BY-STEP
Start by adding liquid ingredients to the blender as a base.
Add yogurt.
Add avocado OR banana, powders, and berries.
Blend well for about 15 - 20 seconds until mixture becomes liquified, yet still thick. The more avocado or banana you have, the more it will be like a desert you need to eat with a spoon.
Pour into a tall glass or bowl.
